What do you think of when you think of orthodox fashion? Instinctively, most people would think of loose, long, and frumpy pieces that are a far cry from being trendy. This is especially the case for women who are expected to cover their collarbones, knees, and elbows for modesty. While the perception of unflattering clothes worn by orthodox women may have been true for a long time in most places- times are changing. Little by little, orthodox fashion is becoming high fashion. That is mainly because many clothing brands, both large and small, are designing apparel that is (finally) modern and trendy.
The current trend, which is likely here to stay, didn’t just come out of nowhere. Religious girls and women worldwide kept facing difficulties in finding modest clothes that met their needs. For example, the long denim skirt would have been perfect if it weren’t for the slit in the back. The long white tunic would have been perfect if the fabric could have been thicker to not make it see-through. And the dress would have been perfect if it weren’t for the cut-outs, peep-holes, and low neck/back. These women had to settle for whatever they could find, and make adjustments by layering up when possible. However, that often led to them sticking out like a sore thumb, especially in areas with warmer climates.
Little by little, major retailers started offering a few modest pieces. Orthodox women flocked over by the masses to purchase the goods, which were finally the perfect mix of modest and stylish. They were beginning to wear outfits that actually gave them joy, confidence, and helped make them stand out. The fashion world began to take notice.
Slowly but surely, trendy modest dresses for women began to emerge to much fanfare from orthodox and nonorthodox women alike. There were ensembles popping up that featured unique color blocks and patterns that made the wearers look and feel more majestic. Neutral colored dresses started coming out with long and flowing designs, making the wearer feel like a goddess. Asymmetrical dresses came out, making the wearer feel like the world was her catwalk. Then there were the dresses with romantic themes, bohemian themes, and more. Women began to rediscover themselves through these dresses, and they are continuing to love every second of it.
We’re currently living in great times in terms of fashion. For most women, it is no longer particularly difficult to find a modest dress that is trendy and made with breathable fabrics. When they step out in their modest gear, they can now do so with full confidence, knowing they look absolutely amazing and in style.
Are you thinking about going on a cruise this summer, but worried about staying modest? Have no fear! We’ll give you some pointers you can keep in mind as you start planning.
For starters, you have to think about the luggage. Most cruise lines don’t have luggage limitation, but then again, most of the cruise cabins have limited closet space. Also, if you’re going to fly to the cruise port, you will have to pack based on the limitations that are imposed by the airlines. Although you will likely bring more than one bag of luggage with you, we highly recommend you pack some essential change-of-clothes with you in your carry-on, just in case your larger bags get misplaced. It happens.
When it comes to deciding what to pack- think about the destinations, and the season/temperature there. If you need additional assistance, cruise travel agents can offer good tips. Common sense plays a big role here. If you’re going on an Alaskan getaway, don’t pack for tropical weather.
Here are some basic things we recommend you pack:
- Modest skirts of varying thickness. Extra points if some of them have deep pockets to secure your phone and wallet.
- Comfortables walking shoes, formal shoes, sandals, and slippers. Please make sure the shoes are already “broken-in” to ensure maximum comfort.
- Sports skirts
- Loose, breezy modest tops
- Modest undergarments
- Casual accessories (sunglasses, hats, shawls, etc)
- Modest dresses for visiting holy sites, or prayer gatherings. You can read more about dressing for tourist destinations in this blog post.
- Elaborate skirt/dress for formal nights on the cruise
- Layering pieces
- Exercise clothes
- Rain gear
Frequent travelers know to pack interchangeable pieces of clothing that can be used for multiple outfits, to save time and luggage space. That will allow more room for souvenirs and other purchases from the trip.
Things will get challenging if you’re looking to completely avoid scantily-clad women during your trip. The best that can be done on that front, is to opt for an Alaskan Cruise (to lessen the numbers of scantily-clad women) and look into Kosher Cruising companies. Bear in mind, Kosher cruises are actually arrangements where the organizers take over a percentage of larger cruises. They reserve rooms and a dining hall for the Kosher program, but the rest of the facilities will be shared with everyone else. It will cost a pretty penny extra, but will be worth it for those looking to take part in prayer services, lectures, and gourmet Kosher dining. Most cruises offer Kosher food anyway, but it would moreso be along the lines of airplane food, which isn’t bad- but not great either.
Do you have some other recommendations worth mentioning? We for sure didn’t cover all there is to be said- so sound off in the comments below!
Please bring these modest suits back!
They’re so stylish, elegant, and timelessly chic! From the photos alone, you can tell that they’re also high quality. The world needs more modest suits like these!
Then again, fashion does have a way of coming back in waves. It’s a good thing that modest fashion in general is faring well across the globe. Maybe these modest suits stand a chance of coming back in style.
Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge sure knows how to dress! The more we see her in her public appearances, the more we want to dress like her. Doesn’t she always look fabulous? The best part of all about her style is that it is classy and conservative.
You gotta love the fact that despite her position, she isn’t afraid to wear outfits multiple times. Good on her- because some of her outfits sure cost a pretty penny. Then again, she is also known the wear the typical mall brands that we all know and love as well. Bearing all this in mind- she is very much like one of us. So if you put the two and two together, we can all dress just like the Duchess by keeping a few things in mind.
Let’s start with the most basic factor- stick to dressing modestly. Wait, you already do? Awesome! You’re one step closer to looking like a Duchess!
To dress more like Kate, you would have to steer clear from printed clothing. She tends to stick to solid colors. Sure, we all love prints to some extent, but if you think about it, maybe it’s those solid colors that always keep her looking more chic, slender, and feminine. Also, you have to admit, one of the perks of owning lots of solid-color items is the fact that you can wear some of them multiple times in a short time frame, and no one would really notice. And don’t forget- you can always accessorize to add pops of color into your ensemble. Kate for the most part, tends to stick to one solid color by going monochrome. The results are stunning.
Kate also let’s out really ultra-feminine vibes, because she subtly incorporates girly things into her wardrobe time to time. You’ll periodically see her wearing something that has details such as lace, bows, flowers, beads, or soft pastels. Sure, this may not work for everyone, but it certainly works for her!
One thing we love about her style is a concept that we live by- modest doesn’t have to mean frumpy! Kate wears dresses that flatter her body, without being skin-tight. The fit of her dresses modestly accentuate her figure.
That’s pretty much the basics of the style of Duchess Kate. Now if you want to know why she always looks amazing in photographs- that has nothing to do with what she is wearing. It has everything to do with the fact that she warmly smiles a lot. That is because Kate is comfortable, and confident in her skin, as we all should be.
It’s usually quite fun to dress modestly. Although it can get a little time-consuming, there is something exciting about pairing modest tops with skirts. It’s also fun to choose accessories to go with modest dresses. Some might argue that it’s ‘too much work.’ However, we modest fashionistas know that dressing modestly has a way of changing you and your surroundings.
For starters, men generally treat women who fashionably dress modestly a little differently. The good kind of different. They become more chivalrous. When you dress modestly, you’ll have more people open doors for you, hold elevators, and help carry heavy objects. Interestingly enough, there appears to be differences between when you wear skirts as part of a suit, versus professional-looking dresses. With the former, many feel that others feel somehow threatened by them, as though the wearer is competition. With dresses, the wearer is generally simply seen as a lady.
Also, did you notice that wearing modest skirts and dresses simply makes you *feel* more feminine? You end up feeling softer and lighter. You’ll want to smile more, and you will also become more careful in how you present yourself. It’s an interesting phenomenon because somehow you end up wanting your attitude and mannerisms to match with what you are wearing. You will walk, talk, and maneuver yourself in a graceful manner.
On the flip side, there will be instances where you might initially feel a little self-conscious. For example, we’ve heard of women feeling embarrassed over the thought of being over dressed in places such as coffee shops. They sometimes worry over whether others might perceive them to be unintelligent or simply unaware of how to dress in different places. Our advice? Own your look! Rock that coffee shop, knowing that you’re the best-dressed person there. All eyes are on you? Great! That’s cause you look awesome- so you should feel awesome! At this point, we’re sure you’re perfectly aware that confidence is something that actually shows, as does the lack of it. So be confident, and be luminous! Remember- as long as you are dressed in a modern and modest way, without being too extravagant- you will fit amongst any crowd.
Many modest dressers can’t help but entertain the idea of wearing bathing suits or short sundresses as they pack their bags for vacations to tropical climates. They might also dream of wearing a little something that looks romantic and dramatic that falls off the shoulder for different destinations in Europe. So what do modest dressers do? Try to pick outfits that will still go with the overall theme of the setting. Maybe something turquoise to match with the blue waters, or neutral colors to match with stone walls. Or even floral prints to match with the scenery. But that’s not all that should be kept in mind for modest dressers as they pack.
When visiting areas that include holy sites, religious institutions/neighborhoods, or simply a lot of locals that observe certain customs and traditions, it’s important to respect those observances and keep them in mind to not offend anyone. You must look into what the people of that area consider to be revealing, and try to respect it to the best of your capability. Why? Because there are many areas where visitors that are deemed immodestly dressed could simply be refused entry. In most cases, they are generally more forgiving to people who are visibly tourists, but you never know.
There are some general, universal rules to dressing modestly, for men and women alike. Men are expected to wear clean, pressed long pants. Women are generally advised to wear clothing that goes below the knees and elbows, and refrain from wearing tight garments. It doesn’t matter if it technically covers the skin. Long see-through garments are also obviously a major no-no, unless it’s as a layering piece.
Also, keep a lightweight scarf or shawl handy, in case you go through or visit a religious site. You may need it to cover your neck, shoulders, or your hair. In some cases, ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods would go as far as posting signs along their outer perimeters. They request visitors to respect their observances and be suitably dressed before they enter. It’s the best way to ensure you don’t get “that look.”
