Dressing modestly isn’t always easy, especially when there are so many immodest clothing options to choose from and fewer clothing items that will actually cover you up. Luckily, modest fashion can be achievable if you know what basics you need and how to build upon them. Here at Kosher Casual, we have all of these basics and more!
1. Layering Shirts
With a layering shirt, you can transform practically any sleeveless dress or top into a piece of modest clothing that you’ll feel comfortable wearing. A layering shirt can also be the base for fabulous accessories! Owning several in a range of colors ensures that you’ll be able to complete an outfit without having to think too hard about it.
2. Pencil Skirts
Pencil skirts are a modest basic that can be worn all year round. During the warmer months of the year, this basic can be dressed up with a pair of heels or made completely casual with your favorite pair of comfortable sneakers. In the fall and winter throw on some cozy tights and a pair of boots and you’re ready to go!
3. Maxi Skirts
Perhaps the ultimate modest basic, long skirts (or maxi skirts) should be in every modest woman’s closet. A black maxi skirt can work with practically any top, and it’s comfortable enough for most activities. Or switch things up a bit and choose a bold color maxi to wear with a neutral colored top. However you choose to do it, we know you’ll look great!
4. Tunics
A tunic is an essential basic for day-to-day wear. Paired with a pencil skirt, you’re guaranteed a put-together look that you can take from the store to the office, and it will keep you going into the evening without having to change your clothes! 5. T-Shirt Dresses

Dressing modestly and staying fashionable means finding clothing that fits your body well, just as it would for any woman that wants to look modern and stylish. That means knowing your body shape and finding skirts that flatter your natural curves or lack thereof!
When it comes to skirts, there are a variety of designs to choose from, including A-line, high-waisted, form-fitting, pencil skirts and more. Finding the right style starts with looking at the different types of body shapes.
Apple shape which generally means you have a slim lower body and carry your weight around your middle works best with high-waisted skirts. The high waistband will hit the smallest part of the torso and mask the mid-section. If you can find a skirt that is flouncy or has pleats than that will only add more to the total image and help give a lengthened look to the body shape.
The Banana shape (similar width for the waist, hip, and shoulders) does best with form-fitting skirts. Body-conscious skirts with a fun or loud pattern compliment this body type. Keep the shape of your skirts narrow and that will allow your natural curves to speak on their own.
The hourglass is that iconic shape that looks so great in a long pencil skirt. This body shape with a heavier bottom and a well-defined waist has a skirt specifically designed for her. Skirts with a peplum look especially great as they draw all the attention to your waist and give a perfect space for your lower half. Don’t get caught up in the office style of these pencil skirts, patterns and textured fabrics allow you to take advantage of all the length.

Gotta love the warmer seasons! You can finally take out the prettier modest skirts and dresses that were stashed away this past winter, and rock them in the gorgeous weather without winter coat over it. And hmm, what is one to do when you combine gorgeous weather with gorgeous outfits? Take pics! Lots of pics! Awesome pics!
Camera shy? No problem! Take pics of the flowers in bloom, or fruits ripening in the sun. You can also snap a few pics of your friends/family/pets enjoying the lovely weather. While you’re at it, please don’t limit yourself to stiff pics standing in front of a tree. Capture some warmth, personality, and pizazz to really make your images pop.

There are many contrasting opinions on what qualifies to be considered modest clothing. That is mainly because some religions have rules and guidelines on it that are far more strict than others. Furthermore, it varies between different sects of each religion, and between congregations as well. Modest clothing styles also tend to vary between individuals that don’t necessarily have religious affiliations. In their cases, it has more to do with culture and personal preferences.
In general, modest clothing refers to clothing that obviously covers the most private parts of the body, and is also relatively loose-fitting and doesn’t cling to the contours of the body. For most people who choose to dress conservatively, they opt for the types of colors that are more natural and earthy- the blues, greens, blacks, whites, and browns. When it comes to brighter colors such as the vivid pinks, oranges, and yellows- it varies between the wearer. There are many ultra Orthodox women who refrain from wearing bright colors and/or patterns, for modesty purposes.
There are also the matter of dimensions of each garment. In many religions, women are not permitted to wear short shorts. There are some in which women aren’t permitted to wear fitted pants at all, and are advised to wear modest skirts. But how long is a modest skirt expected to be? Well, in some cases it is expected to reach the knee. In others, it is expected to go below the knee. Then there are those that require skirts to reach the ankles. Women are generally also told to avoid see-through clothing, skirts/dresses with long slits, revealing bathing suits, and in many sects even tops with revealing necklines.
Rules of modesty aren’t limited to clothes. There are also restrictions on the wearing of makeup and jewelry. In some faiths, women aren’t allowed to cut their hair. Although it may appear a bit much to some, there are also strict rules of modesty that apply to men as well. The guiding principle behind the rules of modesty and modest clothing is to project humility and not spark sinful thoughts and actions on oneself or others.

It’s usually quite fun to dress modestly. Although it can get a little time-consuming, there is something exciting about pairing modest tops with skirts. It’s also fun to choose accessories to go with modest dresses. Some might argue that it’s ‘too much work.’ However, we modest fashionistas know that dressing modestly has a way of changing you and your surroundings.
For starters, men generally treat women who fashionably dress modestly a little differently. The good kind of different. They become more chivalrous. When you dress modestly, you’ll have more people open doors for you, hold elevators, and help carry heavy objects. Interestingly enough, there appears to be differences between when you wear skirts as part of a suit, versus professional-looking dresses. With the former, many feel that others feel somehow threatened by them, as though the wearer is competition. With dresses, the wearer is generally simply seen as a lady.
Also, did you notice that wearing modest skirts and dresses simply makes you *feel* more feminine? You end up feeling softer and lighter. You’ll want to smile more, and you will also become more careful in how you present yourself. It’s an interesting phenomenon because somehow you end up wanting your attitude and mannerisms to match with what you are wearing. You will walk, talk, and maneuver yourself in a graceful manner.
On the flip side, there will be instances where you might initially feel a little self-conscious. For example, we’ve heard of women feeling embarrassed over the thought of being over dressed in places such as coffee shops. They sometimes worry over whether others might perceive them to be unintelligent or simply unaware of how to dress in different places. Our advice? Own your look! Rock that coffee shop, knowing that you’re the best-dressed person there. All eyes are on you? Great! That’s cause you look awesome- so you should feel awesome! At this point, we’re sure you’re perfectly aware that confidence is something that actually shows, as does the lack of it. So be confident, and be luminous! Remember- as long as you are dressed in a modern and modest way, without being too extravagant- you will fit amongst any crowd.
